About "Medical Judgment":

Dr. Sarah Gordon lost her husband and daughter. Now she’s about to lose her life.

After losing the two people she loved the most, Sarah Gordon doesn’t think life could get worse. But, after a fire in her garage is ruled an arson, she begins to realize someone is after her—and that person wants to see her dead. But first, they want to see her suffer.

Her late husband’s best friend, Kyle Andrews, and a recovering alcoholic detective, Bill Larson, are trying to solve the mystery before it’s too late, and they’re both trying to win her heart, too. Not only does Sarah feel torn between two men, she also feels as though she cannot trust anyone.

With creepy threats that become more and more sinister, Sarah finds herself in constant fear, but even the best home alarm technology won’t protect her. Who is doing this, and why are they after her?

My thoughts:

After reading two of Richard's  intriguing books; Fatal Trauma and Miracle Drug, I just knew I had to read his newest one.  In Medical Judgement, we meet Dr Sarah Gordon as she is awoken to the smell of fire in her home. Bill Larsen is the officer who comes to investigate after arson is suspected. Kyle Andrews is a friend and lawyer that she asks for help.

Sarah is still mourning for her husband and daughter who both died in an accident  almost a year prior. What do you do when all of a sudden you aren't a wife or a mother anymore? Sarah finally gets to the point where she decides to be the strong person she was before her loss. Kyle feels as if he needs to take care of Sarah considering her late husband was his best friend but then he starts hoping that she will come to love him. The problem is that he really doesn't understand her and why she is still grieving, since he also lost someone and he is over it. He finally realizes that he  Bill is trying to stay sober after his wife and son left him due to his drinking problem. Now, he not only has to prove himself at work but also to his wife hoping she will come back.

Everyone deals with grief in different ways, so a true friend just needs to be there without judging. The survivor(s) are not only dealing with loss but also with the guilt of being the one who lived. Bill's struggle with alcohol opened my eyes to the internal struggle an alcoholic goes through on a daily basis. By using a pastor who struggled with the same issue made me stop and realize just how human they are. It also shows the importance of having someone to talk to when temptation hits. This story is full of suspense and really needs to be read at a leisurely pace so you don't miss anything. I was very surprised at who the culprit ended up being. That is what makes Richard's books so entertaining, you just don't know who the guilty one is going to be.
