When we had our house built we decided to add on a deck. I call it my outside room as it quickly became one of the best features of our house. While we can usually enjoy it most of the year, summertime has a couple of obstacles; the heat and the flying pests; no see ums, biting flies, and mosquitoes during the monsoons. We use tiki torches whenever we can but we can't use them during times of fire restrictions when flames of any form are not allowed at all.

Thermacell offers a variety of Mosquito Repellers that you can use outdoors without an open flame. I received the Thermacell Bristol Repeller Lantern to try out. This lantern set comes with 1 mosquito protection lantern, 3 mosquito repellent mats, and 1 butane cartridge. You will need three AAA batteries, since they are not included. Each lantern repels the pesky insects for a 15X15 area. They have been evaluated by the EPA for safety and effectiveness.

Setting it up is very easy:

Insert 3 AAA batteries in the battery compartment which is in the bottom of the lantern.

Take a repellent mat out of the foil wrapper and slide it under the grill on the top of the lantern. Each mat provides up to 4 hours of  repellent.

Add the butane cartridge that burns up to 12 hours to activate the insect repellent mats.

Once the unit is set up you choose whether you want the either the ambient light on, the repellent on, or both. We tried it for the first time last night with the light and repellent on. The  I just so happened to be getting bit by tiny, pesky flies while I was setting up the lantern. My husband and I sat on the deck about 2 hours and it was wonderful not to get bit at all the whole time the lantern was lit!

The ambient light gives just the right amount of light needed when we were wanting to enjoy the cooler air and looking at the stars. I can see this unit being very handy when we are camping, hunting, or hiking so that we can still have protection from the pests when we can't have flames or don't want flames to deal with. Now we can enjoy the deck all summer long even when the fire restrictions are in effect.
