History used to be a boring subject to me until I started reading autobiographies and historical fiction books about real events that happened. Somehow it brought it into perspective instead of just hearing about things that happened in history books. I remember reading about the French and Indian War but couldn't tell you anything about it. But after reading Alone Yet Not Alone, written by Tracy Leininger Craven,  I know more than I did.

In this inspirational true story, the Leininger family immigrated from their homeland in Germany and now live on their homestead in the Blue Mountains of Penyslvania. Each day they celebrate the blessings they have in their bountiful harvest and homestead by reading the bible and singing hymns. One day tragedy strikes when the French and Indian War begins and the sisters Barbara and Regina are carried away by the Delaware Indian tribe during the Penn's Creek Massacre. The girls are taken over 300 miles of wilderness to Ohio, enduring all the hardships inflicted on them by their steadfast faith in God, and the hope of escape so they can be reunited with their surviving family members. One of the hymn that that the sisters mother used to sing that gave the girls the courage to continue was:
Alone yet not all alone am I
Though in this solitude so drear
I feel my Saviour always to cheer
I am with Him and He with me
I therefore cannot lonely be

This book is recommended for children ages 8 and up. It is an easy read and has only 148 pages. My nine year old enjoyed reading it since he loves history and really loves to read about war. I love that the fact that not only is he learning about a great adventure but he is learning about values. Like my son, once I started reading this story I could not put it down until I was finished reading it. I pray my son and I could have a faith in the Lord that these sisters had. There are discussion questions at the end of the book that allowed me to see just how much my son learned about the story.

The book includes 8 pages of photos from the movie adaptation.

The Author, Tracy Leininger Craven is actually related to the sisters, while she was studying her genealogy with her grandmother Leininger the came across the story. It made such an impression that it inspired her to write this book. She loves history, retelling real-life stories in historical fiction books and spending her free time in the great outdoors with her husband David and their four children.
