Imusa Tortilla Press and Warmer Review and Giveaway - ends 12/14

When I was a child I used to love to watch my grandmother make tortillas. It didn't matter if they were corn or flour tortillas because not only was it fascinating to watch, the tortillas were delicious to eat. Nothing beats homemade tortillas smeared with butter fresh off the griddle. I have wanted a corn tortilla press for quite a few years now so I could make my own corn tortillas. Imusa carries a variety of Latino houseware products. It was fun go look throughout the site and see many of the items my grandmother used. You can find enamelware, tamale steamers, comales (griddles) and so much more.

I choose the eight inch Cast Aluminum Tortilla Press. You can use this lightweight press for more than tortillas. Use this press for making empanadas, chalupas, and tacos. My youngest son was so excited to watch me use it, then he had to give it a try.

How to use the tortilla press: make the masa (tortilla dough) according to package instructions. Form dough into balls about two inches thick.

Cut a piece of wax paper or plastic wrap long enough to cover the top and bottom of the tortilla press. This keeps the dough from sticking to the press. Put dough ball a little behind the center of the press.

Put top press with wax paper down on top of dough ball and press down, pushing in handle to flatten tortilla until the desired thickness.

Lift up the top of press and remove tortilla with wax paper/plastic wrap. Fold over tortilla onto one hand and carefully remove plastic wrap/wax paper with the other hand. Put the flat tortilla on a hot griddle to cook, flipping it once to cook the other side.

The Imusa Tortilla Warmer is made with a 100% polyester outer shell and a high temperature food grade plastic liner. This warmer it is good for tortillas of any size. Place the warmer with the tortillas in the microwave for up to 45 seconds.  It is intended for microwave use only. To wash warmer: invert to put in machine or hand wash, it should be air dried.

When the tortillas are cooked put them inside the tortilla warmer to keep them warm up to an hour. Now my son has experienced homemade tortillas and I can only hope he will have fond memories of making them with his mother.
