The weekend that our family was supposed to go enjoy LEGO KidsFest turned out to be the very same weekend that our 10 year old needed to be in Littleton, Colorado for the ACSI Regional Spelling Bee. Fortunately, our friends Ben and Allison Russell graciously offered to take their children to the event and to write the review for me.
Our
kids were so excited for the opportunity to see the LEGOFest in Phoenix.
We had never been to one before and so had no idea what to expect.
What we saw went well beyond our expectations. The fest was on the
floor of the AZ Cardinals Stadium and encompassed what looked like 5 acres of
space. There were excited families following excited children everywhere
in sight. Here are several highlights from the LEGOFest;

Creations on Display:
There were several areas where our family created things together and
those creations remained on display throughout the night. A particular
highlight was a giant floor map of the united states. kids could create a
famous building and ask the attendants to place them in the city they belonged.
It was clear where Seattle was based on the model of the space needle.
Once finished with their creation, the kids got a gift from the
attendant. This was quite a motivator and it was clear that many kids
traveled throughout the exhibits gathering a small collection of LEGO characters.

Our sons participated in the bridge competition with other kids. Their creation held 10 pounds of weight before crashing to the floor in a heap!

Team Competitions: In the center of the stadium was an area for team competions. It was hosted by a master builder (there are only six LEGO master builders in the world) who kept things lively and interesting. We were able to watch and join in on, the bridge building competition. Five teams worked together on bridge designs and then the master builder put them on the crusher. He applied weights until the bridges collapsed and the winning team received a special LEGO set. The excitement gathered participants from throughout the stadium to watch bridges hold up to 50 pounds.

Though the LEGO world tends to be male-dominated, the LEGOFest did a great job of gathering the interest of the little ladies as well. Our four year old jumped right in in most of the activities but particularly enjoyed the LEGO Friends exhibit. She got to work with mom on building creations with many fun people, flowers, and houses.
The Smaug Statue was an amazing display of detail, lights, and creativity. It made for a perfect picture opportunity for families

Statues: There are statues of various characters everywhere. Near the entrance there is a garden display of many life-sized figures including Bilbo and Gandalf from the Hobbit, Darth Vader, Batman, Boba Fet from Star Wars and Wild Side from the LEGO movie. Our children's favorite by far thought was Smaug from The Desolation of Smaug Movie. He was perched above a crumbling tower and his and belly lit up with flame periodically. We learned that they have a special technique for cemeting the statues together so that kids are free to touch without fear.

All in all this will go down as one of the highlights of our year. In a world of electronic entertainment, it is a pleasure to see how utterly engaged every one of our children were in learning and exploring. It was well planned, well staged, and well executed. I highly recommend this exhibit for your family as well!!!
